Classroom Mastery and SWPBS - Working Together to Support Every Learner
At our school, we are committed to creating classrooms where every student feels safe, supported and ready to learn. Two key approaches that help us achieve this are Classroom Mastery and School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS).
While they have different areas of focus, they work together to create a positive learning environment for every child.
Classroom Mastery focuses on how we teach. It equips teachers with evidence-informed strategies to establish clear routines, build positive relationships, maximise learning time and create calm, predictable classrooms where students know what is expected. Consistent routines reduce uncertainty, increase engagement and allow teachers to spend more time teaching and students more time learning.
SWPBS focuses on how we support positive behaviour. It provides a consistent, school-wide approach to explicitly teaching behavioural expectations, recognising positive choices and responding to behaviour in a fair, predictable and restorative way. Students are taught the behaviours that help everyone learn successfully, just as they are taught literacy and numeracy skills.
Together, these approaches complement one another.
- Classroom Mastery creates the conditions for effective teaching and learning.
- SWPBS provides students with the behavioural skills needed to be successful learners.
Both rely on explicit teaching, consistency, positive relationships and high expectations.
When these approaches are implemented together, students experience the same clear expectations and consistent routines wherever they are in the school. This consistency helps children feel confident, secure and ready to learn each day.
As we continue our implementation journey, our focus remains on strengthening both teaching practices and positive behaviour support. By working together as staff, students and families, we are building a learning environment where every child has the opportunity to thrive academically, socially and emotionally.
