Victorian Teaching & Learning Model

At Maffra Secondary College, we are continuing our work to implement the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model (VTLM) 2.0, with a strong focus on ensuring every student experiences high-quality, evidence-informed teaching in every classroom. 

Throughout Term 3, our staff are participating in structured professional learning cycles centred on a range of explicit teaching practices. This term the focus is: Explicit Explanation and Modelling and Scaffolded Practice. These practices help students learn and remember new information by reducing unnecessary cognitive load, making learning clearer, and supporting the development of knowledge that can be stored and retrieved from long-term memory. 

To support this work, our teachers are engaging in professional learning, collaborative planning and instructional coaching. Our implementation team, practice experts and coaches work together to model effective teaching strategies, observe classroom practice, provide feedback and share successful approaches. This collaborative process helps build consistency across subjects and year levels so that students experience consistent, effective learning routines throughout the school. 

A significant focus this term is ensuring fidelity of implementation, making sure that agreed teaching practices are used consistently and effectively. To achieve this, staff are using observation checklists, coaching conversations, classroom demonstrations and videos of Maffra teachers showcasing effective practice. Learning Walks will also be conducted across the school to gather information about how these practices are being embedded and to identify areas for continued growth. 

We are also seeking feedback from students and education support staff through surveys and focus groups. This feedback, combined with classroom observations and coaching data, helps us evaluate the impact of our work and make informed decisions about future professional learning. 

Our commitment to the VTLM 2.0 reflects our ongoing focus on improving student outcomes through evidence-based teaching practices. We are proud of the collaborative culture our staff have developed and look forward to sharing further updates as this important work continues.
