R U OK? Day Event
On Wednesday the 9th of September our Vocational Major class ran the R U OK? event. Our preparation for the event went back to the start of the term. Our preparation included organising a Headspace wellbeing stall and emailing Madison from East Wimmera Health to participate and run an activity with a smoothie bike that she has let us use for the event.
At the start of the event we talked to all the students, including the Saint Marys Grade 5 and 6s, Donald Primary Schools Grade 5s and 6s and the year 7-10 students from the high school. The conversation had at the start and the end of the event was the importance of asking peers around you the simple question of 'R U okay', and a reminder to be regularly checking in with the people around you.
On the day we had a provided lunch with sausages and hamburgers. We had five activities and four groups with roughly 12 in each group. The activities were a footy game where you had to kick the ball into the bin, an obstacle course where each group gets timed and whichever group finishes the fastest wins, the fastest time was group four with 5 minutes and 32 seconds. The third activity was a wellbeing stall outdoor area with little games like Jenga and there was Madison and Emily talking to the group about mental health and how serious it is. The fourth activity was a basketball game, and the fifth activity was a trivia game.
