Week 9: Footscray West students are upstanders

At our school, being an upstander means taking responsibility to do the right thing and help others when we see something that is not safe, kind, or respectful. Instead of ignoring a problem or walking away, an upstander chooses to act in a positive and respectful way. This helps create a safe and caring school community for everyone.

We can be upstanders in many ways. We might use our voice to advocate for ourselves or others if something is unfair, unsafe, or unkind. We might speak to a trusted adult if we see someone being treated poorly or excluded. We might use our words to support someone who is feeling left out or upset. Being an upstander does not always mean acting alone — it also means knowing when to ask for help from a teacher or trusted adult.

Being an upstander takes courage, but it is an important part of showing responsibility and respect. Even small actions can make a big difference to how safe and supported others feel at school.

Next week, think about how you can be an upstander. Will you use your voice to advocate for yourself and others? Will you ask for help when something is not right? Will you choose to include and encourage others? Every time we act as an upstander, we help make our school a kinder and safer place for everyone.
