Building Belonging

The transition into Year 7 is one of the most significant changes in a young person’s educational journey. Students enter a larger and more complex environment, form new friendships and adjust to different academic and social expectations. During this time, the need to belong is especially important.

In Christian education, belonging is more than a wellbeing strategy. It reflects the biblical understanding that we are created for relationship with God and with one another. 

1 Corinthians 12:27 reminds us:

“Now you are the body of Christ, and each person has a valued place within it.”

When students know they are seen, valued and included, they are better equipped to learn, grow and make positive choices. 

Our Year 7 Community Day was intentionally designed to strengthen this sense of connection. Adding colour and creativity to the occasion, students and staff dressed as something beginning with the letter C (C for Community). The cohort featured a wonderful collection of characters, creatures, careers and other creative costumes. This light-hearted challenge generated laughter, conversation and a strong sense of shared celebration.

Year 7 Captains planned and led activities including sport, trivia, art, drama, service and faith reflection. By placing students at the centre of the day, leadership became more than a title. It became an opportunity to serve, encourage others and contribute meaningfully to the cohort.

Students created a collaborative “community tree”, explored the difference between niceness and genuine kindness through drama, and made welcome cards for our 2027 Year 7 students. These activities demonstrated that every contribution matters and that everyone can help others feel welcome. A devotion writing session also provided students a practical framework for engaging personally with Scripture. 

Shared food, costumes, laughter, creativity and prayer helped create lasting memories. Community does not happen accidentally. It grows when students are given opportunities to participate, lead, serve and care for one another.

Jesus calls us in Matthew 5:16:

“Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Our hope is that our Year 7 students will continue shining Jesus’ light through kindness, service and encouragement. A secure sense of belonging allows students to experience Christ’s love and approach their learning with confidence. By creating a supportive community, we enable them to flourish spiritually, socially and academically.
