Faith Formation in Action

In the previous Networks edition, I outlined Donvale's approach to faith formation, which is centred on Christ's call to make disciples. Through a Christ-centred school community and curriculum, intentional relationships, and meaningful service opportunities, we seek to partner with families and churches to help students grow in their faith, deepen their understanding of Jesus, and live out their faith with purpose.

In this article, I invite you to take a glimpse into what this looks like in practice throughout a typical week at Donvale. There is much to praise and thank God for, both within and beyond our classrooms, through service experiences, student-initiated faith activities, and the faithful dedication of our staff.

In Primary this week:

A Year 3 class began Wednesday with their regular Worship Wednesday gathering, singing Sons and Daughters (of God). Students were then encouraged to share one thing they were thankful for as sons and daughters of God.

Also in Year 3, students explored Psalm 104 and considered how God provides for animals through the habitats He has created.

Meanwhile, our Grade 6 students are making their final preparations and eagerly anticipating Friday's Mission Market.

During assembly, four students shared testimonies about overcoming personal adversity in the lead-up to interschool athletics. It was encouraging for students to hear their peers describe how they persevered and achieved their goals through faithfulness, commitment, and trust in God's promises.

In Secondary:

Coincidentally, the theme of faithfulness to God's call and perseverance through challenges was also explored during Monday's assembly. A Year 12 student reflected on Philippians 3:12-14, sharing how these verses encourage us to keep our eyes fixed on God's greater purpose for our lives when we encounter difficulties.

At Tuesday's lunchtime session of Donvale Disciples (Youth Alpha), more than 100 senior students gathered to hear an expert panel of staff and a former student respond to their "big questions" about faith. This student-led initiative has created meaningful opportunities for discussion, exploration, and spiritual growth among our senior students.

During the Human Body unit in Year 8 Science, students have been discovering how God has designed our bodies with extraordinary precision. They have explored how billions of cells, intricate organs, and complex systems work together seamlessly, reflecting His wisdom, creativity, and care in sustaining life.

Our Faith and Mission student leaders have also created opportunities for staff and students to write notes of prayer, encouragement, and gratitude for our Year 12 students. Letterboxes have appeared throughout the College, and these messages will be displayed in the Year 12 common room for students to read during their final weeks at school.

When we describe our College as Christ-centred, these are just a few examples of the many moments that point to that reality each week. Intentional discipleship is fostered through eight key areas, shown below. 

Throughout their journey at Donvale, students experience a variety of discipleship opportunities designed to support their spiritual growth and transformation from childhood through to becoming independent, maturing followers of Jesus.

Our deep hope is that every student leaves Donvale spiritually equipped, grounded in faith, and prepared for the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.
