Middle School Report

Term two has been a term full of opportunity and learning growth for Middle School students both in the classroom and within our wider school community. I would like to start by thanking students across years 7, 8 and 9 for their efforts and engagement in their learning outcomes as well as their active participation in school activities whether it be during lunchtime events, concerts, athletics carnival or representing the school at interschool sports. The active engagement in our school community creates the basis for a positive and inclusive learning environment.

During term 2 Middle School students had the opportunity to use their voice and share their experiences of secondary school through the Attitudes to School Survey, which was completed throughout each year level to provide leadership with insight to their school experience and how we can support them further as we continue through 2026.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank families for your ongoing support to ensure all of our students are able to achieve their best and access the support they need to create a calm and engaging learning environment.

Regards,

Jarrod McDonald

Acting Assistant Principal - Middle School

Our Year 7 students proudly represented our college at the Interschool Sports Divisional level held at the end of March. Competing in Volleyball and Tennis, students demonstrated outstanding teamwork, sportsmanship, and determination throughout the day. It was fantastic to see so many students stepping outside their comfort zones, encouraging one another, and representing the college with pride both on and off the court.

In April, our Year 7 cohort participated in their very first Athletics Carnival, and the enthusiasm on display was incredible. Students eagerly got involved in a wide range of events, supported their peers, and embraced the spirit of friendly competition. Students competed in a mixture of track & field events with the 100m sprint being a crowd favourite.

To celebrate a successful Term 1, students enjoyed a fantastic excursion to BOUNCE where they had an absolute blast. From trampoline dodgeball to obstacle courses, students fully embraced the experience while consistently demonstrating our school values through their behaviour, respect, and encouragement of others. Staff were incredibly proud of the way students conducted themselves and the positive manner in which they represented the college in the community.

Term 2 has also been filled with many successes and opportunities for our Year 7 students. Our cohort recently completed the Attitudes to School Survey, providing valuable feedback about their learning experiences and wellbeing at school. Students have also been enjoying participation in a weekly basketball competition and taking part in a Homegroup Challenge, with the winning class rewarded with a pizza lunch, congratulations to 7C on their fantastic efforts! To finish off another great term, we are excited for our upcoming end-of-term excursion where students will be heading to bowling together.

Thank you to all Year 7 students for a wonderful semester filled with enthusiasm, growth, and positivity.

Term 2 has been a busy and positive term for our Year 8 cohort, with students continuing to engage in a range of opportunities both inside and outside the classroom. It has been wonderful to see so many students demonstrating enthusiasm, school pride, and a willingness to contribute positively to the Year 8 community.

Earlier this term, our Year 8 Student Leaders were officially announced at assembly and presented with their certificates in recognition of their leadership role within the cohort. We look forward to seeing the positive impact they will continue to have throughout the year. One of their first initiatives has been the introduction of a student suggestion box, providing Year 8 students with an opportunity to use their voice, share ideas, and contribute to decisions that help improve their school experience.

We were also incredibly pleased with the outstanding response rate to the Attitudes to School Survey. The high level of participation demonstrates that our Year 8 students value having a say and are invested in helping shape decisions made within the school community. Student feedback plays an important role in helping us celebrate successes and identify areas for continued growth and improvement.

A key leadership focus for Year 8 this term has been improving punctuality and ensuring students arrive to class on time and ready to learn. It has been fantastic to see this focus having a positive impact, with more students consistently arriving to class on time and ready to engage in learning. We are particularly proud to celebrate that 53 Year 8 students have arrived on time to every class so far this term, demonstrating excellent responsibility, organisation, and commitment to their learning.

Athletics Day was another highlight of the term, with Year 8 students showing fantastic enthusiasm and participation. It was particularly pleasing to see more students involved than expected, with many embracing the opportunity to challenge themselves, support their peers, and demonstrate positive school spirit throughout the day.

We are also excited for our upcoming ice skating excursion on June 1 and 3, which will provide students with a fantastic opportunity to try something new, learn a new skill, and enjoy some fun with their classmates outside of the classroom environment. We look forward to seeing students build confidence, resilience, and positive memories through this experience.

Looking ahead, Year 8 students will begin the subject selection process next term as they prepare for Year 9 in 2027. Families will receive further information via email in Term 3, including access to the student handbook to support informed decision-making regarding elective choices. Students will also receive support throughout the process from their English and Humanities teachers, who will guide them in understanding subject options and selecting pathways that align with their interests and strengths.

The Year 8 team would like to thank families for their continued support throughout the term and look forward to continuing to support students as they grow, connect, and make the most of the many opportunities available to them at Edgars Creek Secondary College.

Our Year 9 students have had a fantastic start to the term, with several exciting events already showcasing their enthusiasm, resilience, and positive attitude.

We would like to congratulate all students who participated in the recent City Experience excursion to the NGV. Students represented the school exceptionally well throughout the day, demonstrating maturity, respectful behaviour, and strong engagement with the activities and exhibitions. Staff were extremely proud of the way students conducted themselves and embraced the experience.

Congratulations must also go to our Year 9 students for their efforts and participation at the Athletics Carnival. Whether competing in events, supporting their peers, or contributing to the positive atmosphere of the day, students displayed excellent sportsmanship and house spirit. It was wonderful to see so many students getting involved, encouraging one another, and challenging themselves both on and off the track.

A reminder to families that City Experience Week will take place in Week 8. This program is a compulsory component of the Year 9 curriculum and is designed to help students develop the confidence and skills required to navigate Melbourne safely, responsibly, and independently. Throughout the week, students will participate in a range of activities focused on teamwork, problem-solving, and public transport navigation. We encourage families to discuss the importance of responsible behaviour and preparation with their child in the lead-up to the program.

Throughout Term 2, Year 9 students will create resumes and cover letters as many of them prepare for part-time work. Our staff provide valuable guidance in creating strong, job-ready applications. We encourage you to speak to your child about part-time work and what they have created so far in Innovations. Please reach out to the Year 9 team if you would like us to help your child apply for any particular jobs.

Parents and carers are also advised that Early Access VCE application forms were distributed to students during Week 6. Completed applications are due by June 19. Students considering undertaking an accelerated VCE subject are encouraged to carefully review the application requirements and speak with their teachers or Year Level Coordinators if they have any questions.

We thank families for their continued support and look forward to another successful and engaging term for our Year 9 students.
