News from our Classrooms - Year 6 - Mecwacare Visits 

Year 6 Visit Mecwacare Aged Care  - Reaching Out to the Community... 

This term the Year six students visited an age care home called Mecwacare Aged Care. Every two or three weeks at the end of second break we walked down with Miss Allen and an LSO or another teacher to Mecwacare. 

On our first Monday Mrs Gray came with us. When we got to the home, we were greeted by Wendy who took us upstairs. Every Monday at Mecwacare, the residents play bingo. We all sat down next to a resident. They were all really nice and asked us lots of questions. It was the first time any of us had played a game of bingo but the residents had played many times before. They all took it really seriously. Once a game started they all focused and didn't ask any more questions. If somebody on the table you were sitting on won, you got a chocolate and some chips. We did the same thing with a different resident for the second week.

The third week, the last week of the term, was our favourite week so far. When we walked in we saw a robot going around. A man told us that this robot talks to residents in any language and sings them songs. This time we didn't go up the lift, we stayed downstairs. 

We walked past lots of rooms that had things like salons in them for the residents. When we walked in, all of the residents were smiling and excited to do the activity with us. We were going to be making little Easter egg shaped cushions.  Many of them had sewed before and knew exactly what they were doing but some of them needed help with tying knots and getting started with their stitching. They told us stories and told us about their day. Some of them could even speak a different language and taught us how to say things in the language that they spoke. 

On my table someone spoke Irish and German. This was a really great activity and we had already had some practice in electives with Mrs Meseha.  At the end when I went up to give one of the ladies on my table my egg, she started taking pictures of us. 

We really loved our visits to Mecwacare.
