Mobile Phone Policy

Melba College phones, headphones, earbuds

Students are not permitted wireless earbuds, headphones and mobile phones during school hours. Students in all Victorian schools are prohibited from using mobile phones and devices in school, and this will be strictly enforced at Melba College. Students are not permitted to have mobile phones, earbuds or headphones between 9am and 3pm (3:50pm if they are in detention or catch-ups).

What happens if a student is caught with a mobile phone or earbuds?

At the end of the page, there is a very easy infographic to assist families and students with the process.

First offence - mobile phone confiscated and picked up by the student at the end of the day

Second offence - mobile phone confiscated and picked up by the student at the end of the day, after school detention issued by the Year Level Leader

Third offence - mobile phone confiscated and picked up by a parent.

Subsequent offences - mobile phone confiscated, parent meeting with Year Level Leader and picked up by a parent.

Mobile Phone exemptions

Exemptions are only granted under extenuating circumstances with current, substantial and detailed medical documentation, at the discretion of the Principal, for limited time periods during class time, and never during teacher instructions, break times, or SACs/tests/assessments.

How Parents and Carers can help?

We request parents and carers to support us in enforcing the device use policy by:  Reiterating to your child that they are not to use their phone or electronic communication device at school

Reminding them that if they wish to contact family during the school day, they must do so through the relevant administration office.
