Connection Before Correction
Children learn best when they feel connected. A sense of connection makes them feel safe, valued and understood — and when kids feel safe, they’re far more open to listening, learning and growing.
It can be tempting to jump straight into “correction” when we see messy rooms, forgotten lunchboxes, or sports skills that need improvement. But without connection, correction can sound a lot like criticism. With connection, it feels like encouragement and guidance.
“Connection is why we’re here; it gives purpose and meaning to our lives.”
(Dr. Brené Brown, 2012).
This quote is the reason I am in education, in my current role, and why I love this school. When we put connection first, we’re showing our children that their worth isn’t tied to neatness, perfection or performance — but to who they are as people.
Every child connects in their own way — some through face-to-face friendships, others through shared activities, sport, online games, or even just hanging out. Connection doesn’t always look neat and tidy, and sometimes it might even come with a messy bedroom or a strong opinion about the “essential” need for another catch-up with friends!
The important part isn’t perfection, but presence. Taking time to laugh, listen and share moments of joy tells children: “You matter. I’m in your corner.” When that connection is strong, children feel supported enough to handle correction when it comes — because they know it’s built on a foundation of love and trust.
✨ Wellbeing Tip: Remember: a strong relationship today builds the trust that makes tomorrow’s “teachable moments” possible. ✨
