Learning News - Term 3, Weeks 3-4

Maths

K/1

In Maths, our K/1 students have been developing their understanding of subtraction and fractions through hands-on, engaging learning experiences. We have been exploring subtraction by taking away, finding the difference and using a range of strategies to solve problems. Students have also been learning about linear fractions, exploring how a whole can be divided into equal parts and representing halves and quarters using concrete materials, pictures and number lines. It has been wonderful to see students building their mathematical confidence and explaining their thinking as they work through new challenges!

Over the past few weeks, our Year 2 and Year 3 students have been diving into the world of multiplication! Year 2 focused on building a strong foundation by making equal groups , using repeated addition , and skip-counting using number lines. Year 3 built on these skills by using arrays, identifying multiples  and exploring clever mental strategies like doubling numbers to multiply by 2 or double-doubling to multiply by 4! Together, both grades explored "turn-around facts", showing that 3 times 4 is the same total as 4 times 3 and practiced putting their skills to the test by solving fun word problems.  Next we are diving into a new unit learning more about Two Dimensional  Spatial structure - Area.

Year 4

This week Year 4 have been exploring 3D objects and their properties as well as trying our hand at drawing them.  With a few tricks up our sleeve, making them look realistic is tricky but doable!  We made skeleton views of prisms and pyramids using toothpicks and playdough and then examined them for flat surfaces, curved surfaces, edges and vertices.

Stage 3 are taking 'Chance and Probability' one step further, focusing our learning on how to measure probability using correct mathematical terms, numbers and fractions. We have been discovering the difference between what should happen in theory and what actually happens when we run a test. They have been loving our hands-on learning, using coins, dice and spinners and recording outcomes and tracking results. We still have one more week of our learning within Chance and Probability and can’t wait!
