Year 5/6 - Newsletter

Dear Parents and Carers,
We’ve had a busy and exciting few weeks in 5/6 and wanted to share some highlights and upcoming events with you.
Maths Day
Thank you to all our parents who joined us in classrooms for some maths activities on Maths Day. Our students had a great time and enjoyed seeing everyone dress up for the day.
Athletics Day
With amazing weather, Athletics Day was a fantastic success! A huge thank you to the parent volunteers who supported our students throughout the day. We were so impressed with the effort and behaviour of our 5/6 students and we certainly came back to school with ribbons galore!
Mathematics
We are continuing our unit on additive thinking with a focus this week on estimation and rounding in addition and subtraction. Students have been developing strong mental math strategies and applying their skills to real-world problems.
Literacy Circles
Literacy Circles are in full swing, and it’s been great to see students so engaged in their books and participating in rich discussions during their meetings. The level of thinking and collaboration has been very impressive! Now that groups have a 1 week turn-around, some reading and role work may need to be completed at home.
Inquiry
This week our inquiry lessons delved into the risk and prevention strategies in a bushfire. We looked closely at our school Shelter-in-place building and the recent fire prevention measures that have been implemented. A reminder that Natural Disaster projects are due by the end of Week 9 for our exhibition day in Week 10.
Reminders
- Interschool Sport: This week’s game is home v Eltham East – please ensure students have the appropriate gear.
- Parent Student Teacher Conferences: As per the Compass post, PST conferences will be on Wednesday June 24th. Please keep an eye out for the Compass post regarding bookings opening up.
Thank you for your continued support. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out.
Warm regards,
The 5/6 Team
