Advance Canoe & Water Safety Program
This term in 9-10 Advance, students completed the Canoe & Water Safety Program. Throughout the program, students developed their paddling ability, water confidence, teamwork, and decision-making through structured training sessions held at Tea Tree Lake with the final test a Canoe excursion to Lake Bolac.
Students built practical skills including:
- launching and landing procedures
- canoe control
- forward and reverse paddling
- steering techniques
- communication signals
- hazard identification
- weather awareness
- water safety practices
Students also completed theory sessions focused on:
- excursion planning
- equipment preparation
- risk management
- emergency procedures.
The final excursion to Lake Bolac provided students with the opportunity to apply everything they had learned throughout the term. Conditions on the day were ideal, with calm weather and excellent paddling conditions allowing students to experience sustained paddling and open-water navigation in a safe and enjoyable environment.
A highlight of the day was students' confidence and teamwork. While they prepared equipment, completed safety and equipment checks, worked effectively in paddling teams, and demonstrated confidence and responsibility on the water.
