Thanks to these amazing students from 2CA.
Because of their care and dedication for our new chickens, we were able to enter them in the Schools’ Poultry section of the Melbourne Royal Show. These three chickens spent twelve weeks at our school before making the journey to Flemington Showgrounds. Here they stayed for eleven days. They were judged on their appearance and their egg laying.
On Sunday 1st October a stringent judging process was underway for the eggs that the chickens had laid during their stay.
These twenty-two eggs were judged on their external shape, size, texture, freshness bloom, colour and uniformity. Two eggs were cracked open and the yolk, albumen, chalazae and air space were also judged and scored.
One of the judges commented that our chickens must be very happy and content because of the evenness of the eggs’ colour.
Our amazing hens were awarded first prize for their eggs.
Thanks also to Frank for his continual care and love for all our animals and students, and for teaching everyone how to care for the chickens. Thanks to Camille Allenby for bringing her students down to name and weigh the chickens, collect the eggs, give them food and water, clean out their coop, lay new straw and read and sing to our new chickens.
No wonder they are happy!
