Dear ANPS Community,

Thank you for your continued support in encouraging students to participate in daily home reading to support their ability to decode texts, as well as develop their comprehension skills to understand what they are reading. Reading is a lifelong skill that supports students in making meaning, building knowledge, and engaging confidently with the world around them.

Regular reading at home plays a vital role in reinforcing the skills taught in the classroom. It helps students build fluency, expand vocabulary, and develop a deeper understanding of texts. Just as importantly, it fosters a love of reading that will benefit them throughout their lives.

This term, we will continue with our fortnightly Reading Raffle at each assembly, to encourage and reward students for their commitment to improving their reading skills. Students are required to bring their reading satchel to school on their allocated day to swap their books.

We also encourage students to reread texts more than once. Rereading allows students to:

Practise and improve their fluency
Build confidence in their reading
Develop a deeper understanding of the text

How you can support at home:

Set aside 15–20 minutes each day for reading
Listen to your child read and encourage them to sound out unfamiliar words
Ask questions about the text to support comprehension (e.g. “What happened?”, “Why do you think that?”)
Celebrate effort and progress to build confidence

By working together, we can support all students in becoming confident, capable, and enthusiastic readers.
