Mr Matt Elson

Hello Gympie East parents, carers and community,

It is amazing to think we only have two weeks left in Term 1. I have been enjoying meeting with teachers and finding out how students are progressing with their learning as we approach assessment time. One common theme that has come up from teachers is how difficult it can be when students miss a day of learning or in some situations are missing multiple days. The loss to learning and the difficulty in catching up can be immense. At the moment, you would be aware that Parent/Teacher interviews are being held. I would ask that you please make contact with your child's teacher and make an interview or even just check if they would like to meet. The information we as teachers find out in Term 1 from parents is invaluable, and for you as a parent you may find out a crucial piece of information from your child's teacher that is having a positive or negative effect on your child's learning. If the times available don't suit, please make contact with them via email and we can find a time that suits.

This week’s PBL focus was to 'Play Safe'. It's always important in schools to cover not only the importance of playing safe but how to play safe. This week we spent time going over how to play safely, especially with our younger students who have had less experience with ways to play safely with their friends. Next week’s PBL focus will be ‘Use Positive Language'. We know it can be difficult to remain positive and choose our words when situations are heightened, which is why we have focussed so hard for the last three years on keeping our classrooms calm. Throughout the week, we will talk with students about the impact of using harsh or aggressive language versus using positive and encouraging language with their peers.

NAPLAN

Congratulations to our Year 3 & 5 students who successfully completed NAPLAN tests over the past week and a half. The tests that students sat for were writing, reading, literacy conventions (spelling and grammar) and numeracy. Results will come through next term and we will be able to see how we compare with schools in our Region, State and across our Nation. Thankyou to the P&C for providing a healthy and yummy breakfast for our NAPLAN students on Monday.

Following the AGM will be a General Meeting where we will continue to work on ways to improve our school. Please check the P&C section of this newsletter for more information. We would love to see some fresh faces, I hope to see you there!
