Year 9 English

On Monday 16th February, Year 9 and Mrs Van Leerdam welcomed Mrs Penny Bolton, who spoke about the issue of homelessness in Warrnambool and Victoria, as part of Year 9’s investigation of the issue of homelessness in Australia.

In the past weeks, the students have been challenged to broaden and develop their understanding of the causes of homelessness and its effects on individuals, and on the community as a whole.

Because the realities and statistics are both confronting and discomforting, the aim has been for our students to not only understand the challenges and complexities of the problem, but also to develop empathy for those who experience homelessness, either on a short or long term basis.

Mrs Bolton’s focus on Warrnambool and surrounding areas provided the students with deeper understanding of homelessness as it exists in our local area. It was a great opportunity for our students to engage with someone with both experience and wisdom in meeting the needs of homeless people and working to help address the issue as a whole.

Year 12 Legal Studies

Our Year 12 Legal Studies students have been investigating how Australia’s legal system seeks to provide access, equality and fairness for all. As part of this unit, students have been exploring the important roles of Victoria Legal Aid and Community Legal Centres in supporting those who may otherwise struggle to navigate the justice system.

Last week, we were privileged to welcome Jessica Tinetti, a lawyer from Legal Aid in Warrnambool, who generously gave her time to speak with the class. Jess shared insights into her daily work, the types of cases Legal Aid supports, and the real challenges faced by vulnerable members of our community. Her presentation helped students see how the principles they study in class operate in real life.

We thank Jess for helping to bring the legal system to life and for inspiring our Legal Studies students as they deepen their understanding of justice in action.
