Years 1 & 2

Year 1 and 2 students sit quietly in the classroom, concentrating on writing their Chinese stories. With focused expressions, they think carefully, write thoughtfully, and sometimes smile at their own ideas. Their stories are filled with rich and interesting characters, including brave little animals, kind children, talking plants, and magical creatures. Through their writing, the students bring their ideas to life and show their enthusiasm and love for learning Chinese.

In Mathematics, our focus has been on developing fluency with number bonds to 20 and beyond. Students are building confidence in recognising number relationships and applying efficient mental strategies to support addition and subtraction. Alongside explicit instruction, students have been engaging in rich mathematical discoveries through play with manipulatives. These hands-on experiences allow them to explore number patterns, test ideas, justify their thinking, and strengthen their mathematical reasoning skills.

Students worked alongside some wonderful Grade 5/6 helpers to create jungle-themed watercolour paintings ahead of their next Talk for Writing unit - Journey to The Jungle. It was fantastic to see their creativity and collaboration on display.

Reading in Year 1/2

In our Reading Literature unit, students have been practicing how to make connections between characters in texts. Reading The Boy Who Tried to Shrink His Name, we have been talking about how the characters feel at different points in the story and why. The children have also been writing short responses to describe what the characters might be thinking and feeling in key moments. This has helped them to better understand the story and build their confidence in explaining their ideas clearly.
