Term 2 Half Day Stop Work Action - Update - Tuesday 26th May

As parents and carers know, staff at our school who are members of the Australian Education Union (AEU) have been involved in long-running negotiations with the state government and the Department of Education for improved conditions including adequate funding for government school education.

Despite an increased number of ongoing negotiations and the commencement of industrial action, AEU members will be taking further industrial action, including half-day stopworks on a rolling, region-by-region basis as well as other school based measures. This means each school will be affected once. We understand this can cause disruption for students and families.  Staff are taking this action because they care deeply about public education and want to see our schools properly and adequately funded, and to receive fair conditions, all of which are critical to a prosperous future for Victoria’s public school students.

Union members at Surfside Primary School along with Geelong schools will stop work for half a day on Tuesday 26th May

We will communicate further advice closer to the date and will continue to keep families informed about any action that may affect our school community. We appreciate the support of our school community to ensure that we have adequately supported staff and government schools in the state of Victoria.

ANZAC Day Service and March - Ocean Grove & Barwon Heads RSL

As we remember and celebrate ANZAC Day on Saturday 25th April we invite our students and families to participate in the annual Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads RSL ANZAC Day march and service.

The ANZAC Day service will take place on Friday April 25th at the Ocean Grove Cenotaph in the Ocean Grove Park at 10.00am

Prior to the service community members of Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads will participate in an ANZAC Day march and we invite you to come along and represent Surfside Primary School. It is recommended that students wear their school uniform and meet Mrs Lynda Patterson in the main street opposite Coles at 9.30am. The ANZAC Day march begins at 9.45am. Our school captains will be participating in the ANZAC Day service to lay a wreath on behalf of Surfside and read a poem.

School based ANZAC Day service - As a school we celebrated ANZAC Day with an assembly service on Friday morning, we thank our school captains for leading a wonderful service and the respect of the students.

Surfside 'Kiah' Colour Run

The sun was shining and the colour was flowing for the 2026 'Kiah' Colour Run. It was a great opportunity to get together as a school community and have some fun with plenty of smiles. We want to say a big thank you to our school community for their fundraising support of the event. This is one of our major fundraisers during the first part of the year and your contributions go a long way toward supporting our award winning Kitchen and Garden program. The Kitchen and Garden program is fully funded by our school community and receives no support from the Department of Education or State Funding. It allows our students to build life long skills and amazing collaboration techniques.

A massive thank you to Jamie-Lee McPherson, the year 5 team and our year 5 students who did a magnificent job in implementing our obstacles and some new initiatives. Also a massive thank you to Vicki and our administration team for their organisation. A special shout out to our amazing parent helpers who helped to prepare our colour for the event. Surfside Cross Country

Due to construction of the new bike track at Kingston Park we had a new venue for the Surfside Primary School Cross Country at Shell Road Pavillion. We had beautiful weather to start the day and this continued throughout our morning event. The students faced a number of different surfaces and small hills to test their endurance whether they were out to qualify for the next round or out for a jog to score some valuable points for their house colour. It was great to see everyone out having a go and plenty of smiles as well as plenty of tired faces at the end. A big thank you to our Sport Captains for organising our house chants and supporting the students. Also a big shout out to Mr Baker for his organisation of the event. We will soon notify our students who have qualified for the next round of Cross Country, announce our winning house and present ribbons at our at our week 2 assembly.

Student Attendance

Regular attendance at school is very important for your child's learning and social development. Very good attendance for a child is 95% and above.

It is important that children are at school as much as possible to ensure the BEST opportunity for learning growth. We need to utilise every available minute to ensure student growth academically, socially and emotionally, in and out of the classroom.

If early collection for a shopping trip or to beat the traffic happens on a regular basis this can take away from valuable learning time throughout their schooling life. Please take the time to read the graphic below and to understand the long term affect this can have on student development. We understand that students are impacted by illness, injury or other ailments. If your child is going to be absent you are required by legislation to notify the school by:

  • Logging onto Compass  and
  • Enter the absence for full days only
  • If your child/children arrive late or are being collected early, the office staff will enter this onto Compass for you.
