What is fact fluency?
Fact fluency is the ability to recall basic number facts quickly, accurately, and confidently. This includes subitising collections, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts that students use as the building blocks for more complex mathematical thinking. Fluent students can recall facts without needing to count or use inefficient strategies, allowing them to focus their thinking on higher-level problem solving.
At Surfside Primary, we emphasise an important instructional sequence: accuracy comes before fluency. Students first develop correct understanding and accurate recall of number facts. Once accuracy is secure, repeated practice builds speed, efficiency, and automaticity—this is what we refer to as fluency.
Why is fact fluency important?Strong fact fluency is essential for students’ success in mathematics and beyond. When students can accurately and fluently recall basic facts, they are able to:
Beyond mathematics, fact fluency supports everyday life skills such as budgeting, time management, measurement, and decision-making that require quick and accurate mental computation.
What is happening at Surfside Primary? At Surfside Primary, we are committed to developing strong mathematical foundations through a consistent whole-school approach that prioritises accuracy first, then fluency through deliberate practice.
Students are supported through a range of targeted programs:
These programs are embedded into daily classroom practice to ensure learning is intentional, consistent, and developmentally appropriate.
How can parents support at home?
Fact fluency develops best when practice is short, frequent, and consistent. “Little and often” is far more effective than long, occasional sessions.
Parents can support by:
At Surfside Primary, we know that strong fact fluency is built on strong foundations. By prioritising accuracy first and then fluency through regular practice, we are helping students become confident, capable mathematicians for life.
