Around the Classrooms

3/4M 

The students in 3/4M started Term 3 with positivity and focus. They have shown respect in their interactions with their teachers and peers by listening to the speaker and showing kindness to one another. They have also demonstrated the value of responsibility by getting their belongings organised before class time which has helped them to be ready to learn. This week we have been learning about resilience with a specific focus on working through challenges. As a class we will continue to unpack some of the challenges the students are facing in their learning and outdoor areas and identify strategies to help build resilience. 

In Inquiry, our focus is Geography. Specifically, we are looking at Australia and its close connections with its neighbours. In class, the students have been learning to locate Australia and its neighbours on a world map, as well as identify Australia's states, territories and capital cities. The students have been very engaged when looking at and labeling their own maps of Australia and through these tasks they are learning the importance of accuracy and presentation. In addition to mapping, the students have also been learning about the diverse landscapes across Australia, as well as identifying Australia’s geographical features as natural or human. 

In writing, we are focusing on building our vocabulary and persuasive writing skills. Last week we focused on persuasive High Modal Words (HMW) to help us write simple sentences stating a point of view. We also explored the purpose of a persuasive text, discussed the difference between a fact and an opinion and started to learn how to structure an introduction. This week we have continued to expand our vocabulary and we have identified the key features of an introduction: Hook, Global Statement, Definition, State Your Position, Linking Sentence. The students are now learning to use a Persuasive Writing Planner to state their arguments for and against the topic ‘Children Should Volunteer’.
