Philippians 4:13 'I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me'

We are learning to be resilient like Jesus. When things are difficult, I can be brave, keep trying and trust that God is with me. The Preps explored the story 'David and Goliath'-1 Samuel 17. David was a  young shepherd who faced the giant Goliath. Everyone was afraid but David didn't give up. He trusted God and bravely faced something that seemed impossible. When something is hard or scary, I can keep trying, be brave and trust God, just like David.

We wondered:

How do you think David felt when he saw Goliath?

Did David give up?

Who did David trust?

What can we do when something feels too hard?

We made band aids with some I can statement affirmations such as I can bounce back, I can be resilient, I can try again, I can make mistakes and its okay, and I can be kind.

Dear God, 

Help me to be resilient like Jesus.

When things are hard, help me to be brave, keep trying and not give up.

Help me to trust You and remember that You are always with me.

Give me strength when I feel worried or sad, and help me to show kindness and courage.

Amen

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew

Jesus left Gennesaret and withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. Then out came a Canaanite woman from that district and started shouting, ‘Sir, Son of David, take pity on me. My daughter is tormented by a devil.’ But he answered her not a word. And his disciples went and pleaded with him. ‘Give her what she wants,’ they said ‘because she is shouting after us.’ He said in reply, ‘I was sent only to the lost sheep of the House of Israel.’ But the woman had come up and was kneeling at his feet. ‘Lord,’ she said ‘help me.’ He replied, ‘It is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the house-dogs.’ She retorted, ‘Ah yes, sir; but even house-dogs can eat the scraps that fall from their master’s table.’ Then Jesus answered her, ‘Woman, you have great faith. Let your wish be granted.’ And from that moment her daughter was well again.

1. What happened when the woman in today’s gospel first called out to Jesus for help?

2. Why do you think the disciples tried to turn her away?

3. How did Jesus reward her faith?

4. Have you ever heard of or seen people in need who have been turned away?

5. How should we treat people who are in need or different to us?
