Why do we need a South Australian Curriculum?

Over the past two years, teachers at Uraidla Primary School have been learning about and putting the new South Australian Curriculum into practice across our teaching and learning programs. As families and community members have become more familiar with this change, an important question has often been asked: Why do we need a South Australian Curriculum, and how is it different from the Australian Curriculum?

The South Australian Curriculum has been designed to better reflect what young people need for their future. While knowledge remains very important, the curriculum also recognises that education is about more than just what students can remember. It focuses on who students are becoming, what they can do, and what they understand.

This means students are supported to build strong subject knowledge alongside important learner capabilities and positive dispositions, such as curiosity, resilience, collaboration and critical thinking. These qualities help children not only succeed at school, but also grow into confident, capable learners who can contribute positively to their communities.

Another important feature of the South Australian Curriculum is its focus on deep learning through concepts, rather than simply covering content. This helps students make stronger connections in their learning and apply their knowledge in meaningful ways.

The new learning standards also reflect this broader view of education by valuing what learners can be, do and understand. This approach supports us to nurture well-rounded young people who are prepared for both learning well and living well.

At Uraidla Primary School, we are excited about the opportunities this curriculum provides for our students and we look forward to continuing this journey with our community.
