MONT DE LANCEY EXCURSION

On Friday, 16 October, the Grade 2 students enjoyed an exciting excursion to Mont De Lancey Homestead, a historic property established in the 1880s. The visit provided a wonderful opportunity for students to step back in time and learn about what life was like for families living and working in the Yarra Valley many years ago.

The students dressed up in clothing from the past and certainly looked the part! We explored the heritage buildings, beautiful gardens, working machinery and one of the Yarra Valley’s most significant historic collections. The day was filled with opportunities to discover, explore and experience history firsthand.

During our visit to this fascinating historical property, students were lucky enough to:

  • Step inside the historic family homestead and discover what life was like for families in the past.
  • Discover how meals were prepared in the traditional timber slab kitchen.
  • Visit the charming 1920s weatherboard chapel and learn about its place in the community.
  • Explore everyday household and farm items from different periods in history.
  • See historic farm equipment and vehicles displayed in the Machinery Workshop.
  • Watch the blacksmith and woodturner hard at work at the forge, demonstrating traditional skills and techniques.
  • Stroll through the beautiful gardens overlooking the Yarra Valley and immerse ourselves in the types of games children played in the past.

The excursion was a wonderful hands-on learning experience that brought history to life for our Grade 2 students. Students thoroughly enjoyed exploring the property, learning about the past and comparing how people lived, worked and played then with how we live today. It was a memorable day filled with curiosity, discovery and fun in the sun!

What a fun couple of weeks we have had in Grade 3/4!

In Literacy, we have been writing descriptive paragraphs about our chosen athletes, using interesting vocabulary and descriptive language to bring their achievements and qualities to life. The students have enjoyed learning more about their athletes and sharing what makes them special!

In Maths, students have been learning to interpret maps by identifying map symbols, legends, different perspectives and cardinal directions. They have explored how to use grid references to locate places and have applied their knowledge to create their own maps. Students have also practised giving and following directions to navigate maps and describe the location of different places.

The weather has been amazing, and 3/4M was lucky enough to spend some time in the garden harvesting beetroots and radishes! The students loved seeing the results of their hard work and getting hands-on with nature. 🌱

Grades 5 & 6

What a busy few weeks it has been in grade 5/6! Our Grade 6 students recently had a visit from Victoria Police, focusing on being positive members of the community and the skills they’ll need to thrive beyond primary school. They have also been busy designing posters for this year’s Grade 6 graduation video!

Meanwhile, our Grade 5 students have been working hard on their leadership speeches for Grade 6 positions next year, reflecting on their strengths and how they can contribute to our school community.

In our Minecraft project, students have now stepped inside their biomes and are exploring how to adapt a farm to suit their environment and create a sustainable lifestyle. It has been wonderful to watch them problem-solve and apply their learning in such a creative way.
