Congratulations to our year six students for their work on preparing for their PYP Exhibition. Students will have the opportunity to visit with their classes on Thursday, with parents/special guests visiting Thursday night.  We hope that they enjoy sharing their learnings during the exhibition.

Congratulations to our girls and boys basketball teams who played off at division finals on Wednesday, they did a wonderful job representing Auburn South Primary School, showing determination and strong team work throughout.  Congratulations to you – please read more about this in Mr Parhar’s report.

A special mention and congratulations to our unofficial futsal team who competed at the National School Futsal Championships in Brisbane during the school holidays.  Congratulations to Lachlan H, Dash R, George W, Josh J, Archer P and Hamish O, who made up the ASPS Avengers 10Y Boys team.

Remembering Jack Davey – 29th October

To bring our community together on October 29, students will be participating in a tabloid sports activity session.  Students will be asked to attend in house colours with students participating in multi-age groupings to complete the tabloid activities.

Two houses will be participating before recess with the remaining two houses participating after recess.  The students will also be working together in houses with alternate activities planned when they are not participating in the house tabloid sports.

Students will meet in the hall just before lunch to come together as a community; reflecting on what it means to work together, support one another, be inclusive, kind and caring, followed with taking a moment for reflection.  This will be led by our Learning Specialist, Hayley Street.

To ensure that all families are aware, this information will also be distributed via Compass to parents next week.

The plan for the day has been made in conjunction with Mike and Jayde Davey, and we thank them for providing us with this opportunity to honour Jack in this way.

Parent/Carer Opinion Survey

Thank you to the families who completed the parent opinion survey – we had the largest response rate ever with 117 parent/carer responses recorded.  We are truly grateful for the feedback and will be using your responses to think about what we can do to improve our school.  We will provide a summary of the results to parents in our next newsletter.

The winners of our parent/carer opinion survey who each receive a $40 Readings gift card are:

1. Sean L – parent of Andrew yr 6

2. Kitty Y – parent of Jocelyn yr 2

3. Melanie B – parent of Flynn yr 4

4. Chloe Q – parent of Alex yr 5 and Charles yr 4

We will contact our winners directly to arrange collection of the gift card.

Grounds/Facilities

You may have noticed that we have our two blue slides currently out of action in the Tooronga Road playground.  This is due to splits in the plastic creating a hazard for students.  The slides will be repaired as soon as possible; however, we are at the mercy of the suppliers with their availability and stock. Please note that we are working on getting these addressed as soon as possible.

Our hall projector and screen are on their way – literally.  We are still waiting for delivery of the electric screen that has been held up in shipping.  The projector and frame have arrived so once the screen arrives, we will be all systems go for installation.

Our fundraising efforts from our Parents’ Association Winter Fundraising event will be going towards new sand in the sandpit and new foam post protectors.  These will enhance the paly spaces and continue to keep our students safe when playing on/near the basketball court.

Before School Activities

If students are attending any before school activities, such as chess club or early arrival for a sporting event, please have students enter through the front gate on Tooronga Road and through the main office area.  This way we can monitor student arrival and ensure that they know where they are going or advise them if there are any changes.

Leave

On a personal note, I will be taking three weeks long service leave from the start of next week, returning on Monday 2nd of November (a curriculum day for students).  Rhian ap Rees will be acting principal during my absence with Hayley Street stepping in as acting assistant principal.  I thank both Rhian and Hayley for their willingness to step into acting leadership positions while I am away.

Warm regards,

Travis

Reminders from Boorondara Council: Helping to make school drop-off and pick-up safer for everyone

Respect the road rules and parking signs

Illegal parking in a school zone is not only inconsiderate to other motorists, it threatens the safety of students. If our parking officers witness a motorist breaking any of the following traffic rules, they will issue them with a fine.

  • Double-parking restricts the view of other drivers, obstructs traffic flow, and means children have to get out of the car onto the road. It also blocks the passage of any emergency vehicles that might need to pass.
  • School crossings are there to ensure children cross the road safely. Parking within 20 metres before or 10 metres after a designated school crossing is illegal.
  • The designated Kiss and Ride areas outside schools are No Parking, with a maximum two-minute standing time. This gives parents enough time to kiss and drop off/collect their kids before moving on to allow the next car to follow suit.
  • School zone speed limits are clearly signposted and must be adhered to.

Walk or ride to school with your child

Walking or riding to school with your child is a healthy and enjoyable way to avoid the inevitable traffic snarls at drop-off or pick-up time.

  • If you must drive, consider parking a few streets away and accompanying your child on foot the rest of the way.
