Supporting students to stay happy, safe and connected...

Attendance

At South Melbourne Primary School, we prioritise regular school attendance.   The goal is to ensure all SMPS students are safe, happy, connected and achieving.

We understand that there are times when your child will need to miss school. To ensure minimal disruption to their education, please schedule family holidays or medical/dental appointments outside of school time.  Missing 1 day of school a fortnight means a child misses 4 weeks of school in a year. Over the course of their Primary School education, this would equate to 3 terms of learning and social experiences missed. If a student at SMPS misses 10 consecutive weeks or more, they are required to exit the school and re-enroll when/if they return.

If your child is well enough to attend but is worried about friendships, schoolwork or exams, please encourage them to come to school. Avoiding school can make these feelings worse and can create a negative pattern of behaviour.  If your child is having difficulty attending school, please talk to their teacher or Miss Jenny (Mental Health and Wellbeing) about getting support: jennifer.davies@smps.vic.edu.au

If your child must miss school, please ensure you add the attendance note via Compass.
