Foundation

Foundation students have had a very busy term! We started by celebrating 100 days of school and Milo’s Birthday Surprise. 

During Book Week we read the children’s book finalists, learnt about characters and setting, and impressed our teachers by how focused on our learning we were on dress up day! 

In Inquiry we have been learning about communities, people who help us and celebrations that bring us together. 

We enjoyed visits by the police and fire fighters! Our unit culminated with some of our parents sharing how they help people and traditional African cooking - Merci Badria and Marian for helping us make Malawah!

 In maths we have been learning about subtraction, equal sharing, addition, days of the week and yesterday, today and tomorrow. Parent teacher meetings were a lovely opportunity to reflect on friendships formed since the beginning of the year, the growth all children have made in their English reading and writing, the new French words and phrases they know, and to hear about children speaking French at home.

Grade 3/4 Learning

One of the highlights of the past few weeks was our Carlton Respect Program. The students were highly engaged throughout the session and enjoyed exploring the importance of respect, teamwork and positive behaviour. The excitement reached a new level when students were told of the incredible opportunity to run onto the field as Junior Mascots for the Carlton Respect Game. It was a fantastic experience that the students thoroughly enjoyed the day.

The students have been demonstrating their growing Civics and Citizenship knowledge through a range of hands-on learning experiences. They have explored what democracy means, investigated the different levels of government and considered the responsibilities that come with being a citizen and of the government.

A particular highlight was creating their very own government. Students took on different roles and responsibilities and put their understanding of democracy into action by participating in their own class election. There was plenty of excitement as students cast their votes and experienced firsthand how an election works.

To finish our learning about persuasive texts, we have moved on to a student favourite, debating. Students have been developing their ability to construct persuasive arguments, provide strong reasons and confidently share their ideas with others. It has been wonderful to see the progression in their reasoning and the confidence they have developed when presenting their points of view. The quality of the debates has been so impressive that it has often been a challenge for our judges to decide who should win each round.

It has been a busy and exciting few weeks, filled with opportunities for students to learn, participate, challenge themselves and, most importantly, have fun along the way!

Grade 3/4 French

Lately this term, students explored persuasive texts, learning how to express and support an opinion in French using appropriate vocabulary and persuasive language (some would like to go on a trip to Madagascar, others would like to invite Mbappé for a soccer workshop to school!). Students also developed their letter-writing skills, writing letters in French to students at our French partner school in Montpellier. They have worked through the writing process, including planning, drafting, editing and publishing, and will send their completed letters after the holidays.

In reading, students focused on summarising, identifying the key information and main ideas in a text and communicating these ideas in their own words. Students applied these skills by selecting a book they enjoy and preparing a short book presentation in French, sharing key information about the book and summarising main events as well as sharing their rating of the book.

Through these learning experiences, students have continued to develop their French vocabulary, sentence structure, comprehension and confidence in communicating ideas in French.

Grade 5/6 Learning

A Term of Learning and Creativity in Year 5/6

It has been a busy and engaging term for our Year 5/6 students, with plenty of opportunities to develop new skills and explore creative ideas. Here are some of the highlights as told by the students.

In French / Inquiry, students explored how laws could improve life in Australia. After a visit to the Victorian Parliament, they developed their own law proposals, including allowing 16-year-olds to vote, free vets for our pets, and introducing age limits for device use. To promote their ideas, students created a persuasive text and a range of creative projects, including videos, board games, dioramas and even a Dungeons & Dragons game!

In Maths, students have been learning to use protractors to measure angles, exploring complementary and supplementary angles, and investigating the angles found in their own names. They also put their knowledge into practice during an angle treasure hunt. Alongside this, students have been developing their skills in long division, which they were very excited about.

In English, students have been learning to write persuasive texts and professional letters. They applied their letter-writing skills by drafting a professional letter. For example, one of the student decided to write a letter to Falco, inviting them to set up a stall at our school fete. Although the letter was not sent, it provided a valuable opportunity to practise writing for a real-world purpose, and it was very fun.

It has been wonderful to see students apply their learning in creative and meaningful ways across the curriculum.
