Prep

Preps are 100 Days Brighter! As Prep teachers, we are extremely proud of the learning that has occurred over these 100 days. We enjoyed celebrating this special day with engaging activities, games, cake, and counting to 100. Congratulations to our superstar Preps and Prep staff.

Grades 1& 2

Grade 1/2 Fairy Tale Adventures

This term, our Grade 1/2 students have been exploring the magical world of fairy tales! Throughout our Literacy lessons, we have been reading and enjoying a range of classic stories, including The Three Billy Goats Gruff, Little Red Riding Hood, The Three Little Pigs, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and many more.

As we read each story, students have been identifying the characters, settings, problems and solutions, while making predictions, retelling events, and discussing the important messages each fairy tale teaches. They have also been developing their writing skills by creating character profiles, writing letters from the perspective of different characters, and retelling familiar stories with their own creative twists.

Our fairy tale learning has extended beyond Literacy into Design and Technology, where students are now designing and constructing their own fairy tale creations, including Bear's chair, a bridge for The Three Billy Goats Gruff, and a house for The Three Little Pigs. It has been wonderful to see their creativity, imagination and problem-solving skills shine as they bring their ideas to life.

Don’t forget to keep sending in your clean recycled materials so that students can continue creating and constructing their fairy tale designs. Items such as cardboard, small boxes, foam, plastic cups, straws and other useful materials are greatly appreciated.

We have loved seeing the students immerse themselves in these timeless stories and can't wait to see their finished fairy tale creations!

Grades 3&4

This term, the Grade 3 and 4 students have been learning how to write a persuasive letter. At the beginning of the term, each class received a letter explaining how some schools in Japan have been trialling robots to support students and teachers. This sparked some fantastic discussions as students worked together to brainstorm arguments both for and against introducing a school robot at Kalinda.

Students are now using these ideas to write a persuasive letter to Mr McClare, convincing him whether or not our school should employ a robot. So far, students have learnt how to structure a persuasive letter and have drafted their introduction and first argument paragraph. We look forward to seeing their persuasive writing skills continue to develop as they complete their letters over the coming weeks.

Grades 5 & 6

After revisiting the events of the past during Term 2, this term we are turning our attention in Geography to the wonderful world around us and Australias role within it. Students are applying critical thinking and research skills as they inquire about a variety of countries around the world and how they are connected to Australia, and as part of our Humanities unit this term, we will also be visiting the Immigration Museum on Wednesday 12th August.

Closer to home, our 5/6 students have begun their 'Aussie Dash' where each class is competing to complete a lap of Australia by visiting major cities along the way. Students can earn kilometres for their class through a variety of ways, including lining up at the beginning of the school day. The competition began with a very entertaining round of 'Pin Uluru on Australia' which was was won by 5/6RT and gave them a handy headstart. After a close first couple of weeks, the 5/6M party bus has hit the lead and has almost made it to Brisbane, with the rest of 5/6 still slowly making their way along the east coast of Australia. One thing is for sure, with the introduction of some helpful (and not so helpful) bonus cards, the road ahead for our 5/6's is anything but smooth…
