Yr 5/6 Open Water Program

Students from Torquay College have been making the most of our beautiful coastal environment through their participation in the Open Water Program. This hands-on program gives students the opportunity to build confidence in and around the ocean while developing important water safety skills.

Throughout the program, students have been learning the fundamentals of surfing, including how to read the waves, balance on the board, and safely enter and exit the water. With guidance from experienced instructors, many students proudly caught their first waves while improving their strength, coordination, and resilience.

Water safety has been a key focus of the program. Students have been learning how to identify rip currents, understand changing ocean conditions, and practice safe behaviours in open water environments.

In addition to surfing, students have also explored the calmer waters of Spring Creek by kayak. Paddling along the creek has allowed them to develop teamwork and paddling techniques while enjoying the natural surroundings and local wildlife.

The Open Water Program continues to be a fantastic way for Torquay College students to connect with the outdoors, challenge themselves, and gain lifelong skills that promote safety and confidence in the water. We are proud of the enthusiasm and effort students have shown throughout the program.
