Musical Notes

Generations In Jazz

Three of our music groups recently travelled to Mount Gambier, South Australia, to take part in one of the country’s premier school music events—Generations in Jazz, held from 2–4 May.

Our Swing Band, Stage Band and newly formed Jazz Vocal Ensemble performed on the Saturday, joining nearly 5,000 students from across Australia in a celebration of musical excellence. A standout moment was the live concert by Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band—Hollywood professionals known for their film scoring and incredible musicianship.

“The highlight of the trip was the second night, where Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band amazed the large audience with their high notes and skilled improvisations,” shared Xavier (Year 9). For Jayden (Year 12), the festival was “an experience I would never replace… it transformed my understanding of what is possible with music.”

Students also attended masterclasses, connected with Big Phat Band members, including a memorable chat with trumpet legend Wayne Bergeron, and gave a heartfelt performance for our long-time hosts at Allendale East Area School. We are sincerely grateful for their continued generosity and support.

Lost Instrument

This is a reminder that it is your son’s responsibility to look after his musical instrument. We have a storage area behind the band room in the Founders’ Complex where students can leave their instrument for the day. Students who choose to leave their instrument near their classrooms, will need to speak to their Pastoral Teacher or Year Level Co-ordinator if their instrument goes missing. Instruments should be taken home at the end of the day, over the weekends and over school holidays.

Damage to Instruments

Any damage to hired instruments will incur a repair cost which will be charged to the student.
