Year 3 Update
Year 3, Term 3 Wrap-up!
Blink, and you’ll miss it! Term 3 has absolutely flown by – but they do say time flies when you're having fun. Our superstar students have continued to take their learning to new heights, showing wonderful enthusiasm every step of the way.
In English, Term 2 was closed out by the students' introduction to their first-ever novel study, a crowd favourite, Kensuke's Kingdom – a story of trust and friendship. They have continued their love of novel studies this term, exploring Charlotte's Web by E.B. White and Two Hands Together by Diana Kidd, with their heartwarming themes of friendship and belonging. This enjoyment of novel studies has sparked the students' engagement in planning and writing their own narratives, building on their skills to hook readers in with sizzling starts and bringing their stories to life with dialogue and
descriptive language.
We have also embarked on our Civics and Citizenship unit, digging into how our local government and community work, and reflecting on where and how we each belong. Students were captivated by The Fox by Margaret Wild, a moving picture book that sparked rich discussion about loyalty, loss and connection. They also loved learning about Anh Do's incredible journey through The Little Refugee, engaging with his story of resilience and finding a place to belong in a new country.
Core Literacy has been a highlight as students have been learning how to join their letters, developing more fluent and confident handwriting. Alongside this, they've continued to grow their morpheme knowledge, building a stronger
understanding of how words are put together.
Our mathematicians have covered plenty of ground this term. In our Multiplication and Division unit, students built on their growing range of strategies for solving problems, solidified their knowledge of arrays and were introduced to how algorithms can help us work out whether a number is a multiple of, or divisible by, another number. We moved into Angles, learning about right angles and how to compare bigger and smaller angles, as well as exploring right-angle and quarter turns. This knowledge came in handy in our Space unit on location and mapping, where students loved designing their own bedroom on the Chromebooks – learning to see the world from a bird's-eye view and using their understanding of turns to navigate their way around different maps.
Year 3 Sport has been a blast as students have continued to show sportsmanship and resilience. They enjoyed learning to play the traditional game of Weet Weet during NAIDOC week. Our students showed off their athletic abilities as our sport sessions took on a Commonwealth Games flavour, with students taking part in freestyle relays on the scooter boards, javelin, tug of war, and bean bag relays.
This term has seen many highs and lows for our cohort, and we thank our wonderful students and their families for the continued support and constant big smiles! We couldn’t be more proud of each one of our superstars and the resilience and maturity they have shown.
We look forward to welcoming back Mr Hayes in Term 4 as we gear up for our final leg of Year 3, before we jet off to Year 4!
