Learning

Learning and Teaching - Bridget Morris
Learning and teaching at St Bernard’s is well and truly underway, with our classrooms already buzzing with curiosity, collaboration, and purpose. It has been wonderful to see students across all year levels settle into strong routines and engage deeply with new concepts and skills.
To support our partnership between school and home, our Term 1 Curriculum Information overviews are now available. These documents highlight key learning focuses and important dates for each year level. While these were recently shared via Seesaw, they are also linked below for your easy reference. We encourage you to explore these to see the exciting learning journey your child is embarking on this term.

Growing Confident Readers and Writers
Literacy is a key priority for us at St Bernard’s this year. We are currently dedicated to ensuring our teaching practices across the school are consistent, evidence-based, and engaging for every student.
Building Foundations in Prep - Year 2
In our Junior classrooms, we are currently refining our approach to explicit literacy instruction. By focusing on the essential building blocks of phonics and word recognition, we are giving our youngest learners the tools they need to become fluent, independent readers.
Our students engaging in a daily literacy session, where we break down complex sounds and letters through clear, direct teaching.
Rich Literature in Years 3 - 6
Our Senior students are currently immersed in intensive Novel Studies. Rather than just reading for plot, students are analysing high-quality texts to explore rich vocabulary and complex themes. This deep dive into literature is a vital part of how we strengthen comprehension and critical thinking.
- Years 3/4: Are currently navigating the adventurous world of Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo.
Years 5/6: Are enchanted by the magical mystery within The Grandest Bookshop in the World by Amelia Mellor.
We look forward to sharing more of this journey with you as we continue to develop our school-wide literacy framework.
Home Connection:
Year 3/4 parents, ask your child: If you were stranded like Michael, what is the one luxury item you’d wish you had with you?
Year 5/6 parents, ask your child: Which department in the Grandest Bookshop would you most like to visit, and why?
