Open Parachute Visit to Buninyong PS

Yesterday, we were pleased to welcome Dr Hayley Watson to Buninyong Primary School. Hayley is the founder and CEO of Open Parachute, a wellbeing program used in schools across Australia, Canada and the United States to support children and young people to build emotional literacy, resilience, coping skills and positive mental health habits.

At Buninyong PS, we use Open Parachute alongside our Respectful Relationships program as part of our whole-school approach to student wellbeing. The program supports students to better understand emotions, navigate friendships and challenges, develop healthy coping strategies and feel confident seeking support when needed. 

We were also pleased to welcome Leah Aston from Hand in Hand, whose generous sponsorship has helped provide all Buninyong PS students with access to the Open Parachute program.

During the visit, we discussed how the program is currently working within our school, including feedback around lessons, staff professional learning and student engagement. Conversations also focused on brainstorming and providing feedback on a new approach being planned by Open Parachute for 2027, with a strong focus on continuing to strengthen wellbeing supports and consistency across the school.
