Wellbeing Learning

In Week 1, our Grade 1/2 students began the term by revisiting our Positive Behaviour Expectations (PBEs) during our Wellbeing lessons. Our three core values- Be Safe, Be Responsible and Be a Learner- help guide students to make positive choices both in the classroom and in the playground.

As part of the lesson, students headed outside to put these expectations into practice. They explored how to be kind and inclusive, take turns, play cooperatively, and use playground equipment safely. The students demonstrated the positive behaviours that help create a safe, respectful and enjoyable environment for everyone.

It was wonderful to see students working together, encouraging one another and confidently demonstrating our school values in action. We look forward to continuing to build these positive habits throughout the term. 

Maths

During Weeks 2–3, our Grade 1/2 students explored the concept of 2D shapes through hands-on learning with tangrams. A tangram is a traditional Chinese puzzle made up of seven flat shapes, called tans. The pieces include two large triangles, one medium triangle, two small triangles, one square and one parallelogram.

Students enjoyed experimenting with the different pieces to create a variety of shapes, including regular polygons, animals, people and other creative pictures. As they worked, they developed their understanding of shape properties, spatial reasoning, problem-solving and perseverance while having lots of fun.

We were so impressed with the creativity and teamwork shown by our students. Take a look at some of the fantastic tangram creations made by the students in Grade 1/2A and Grade 1/2B!

Discovery Learning – History: Toys and Games from the Past

In Discovery Learning, our students have been exploring History and learning about what life was like in the past. This week, our focus was on toys and games and how children entertained themselves before electricity, televisions, computers and tablets became part of everyday life.

The students enjoyed playing traditional outdoor games such as skipping, hula hoops, and discussing games from the past including hopscotch, marbles and elastics. It was interesting to compare the active outdoor games children once played after school with the amount of technology that is often used for entertainment today.

We also discovered that many toys were once handmade using simple household materials rather than being bought from shops. As part of our learning, students became toy makers and created their own Cup-and-Ball game and a Thaumatrope. They had a wonderful time testing and playing with the toys they made while gaining an appreciation for the creativity and resourcefulness of children in the past.

The students are keeping their handmade toys at school as part of their History collection. These will be displayed during our Discovery Open Afternoon at the end of the term, where families will have the opportunity to see the wonderful learning and artefacts the students have created throughout the unit.

Reminder: Please remember to send a shoe box to school if you haven't already. Students will use their shoe box to create a History Box to safely store and display all of the artefacts they have made during our unit. Thank you for your support!

Reminders

• Student Portfolios: Please return your child's student portfolio as soon as possible. We are still missing several portfolios and need them back so we can continue adding your child's learning and work samples.
• Home Readers: Please return home readers every Friday so they can be changed and sent home again on Monday.
• Homework Books: All homework books should be returned on Friday. New homework will be sent home on Monday.
• Discovery Unit Incursion: On Thursday, 20 August, students will participate in an incursion as part of our Discovery unit. Please ensure you have provided consent for your child to attend.
• Book Week: Monday of  Week 7, we will have our Book Week Parade and it would be wonderful to see lots of costumes of the students favourite books.
