"ONE IN, ALL IN"
In Acacia, following on from the children's interest in camping, we've been exploring the land we live on and what makes it special. This includes learning about First Nations people, animals, the bush and natural environments. We provided opportunities for the children to explore a variety of experiences, share their knowledge and extend their understanding. This coincided with Reconciliation Week.
This year's theme for Reconciliation Week was One In, All In. We took this a little literally by making a felted mat using wool fibres in black red, yellow and orange. The idea behind this project was that individually we are all just little bits but when we come together we can create something amazing.
Wet felting is a traditional craft technique that transforms loose animal fibres (like wool roving) into a dense, solid piece of fabric. By combining warm water, soap, and physical agitation (rubbing, rolling, or pressing), the microscopic scales on the wool fibres open and lock together, creating a strong, durable material. We use felt mats in our play spaces all the time and it’s been lovely to use something we made ourselves. We since made a long blue river and are planning on making some ice and snow mats.
