Junior Science Olympiad Results
Congratulations to our 20 Year 9 and 10 students who sat the Junior Science Olympiad this year! The JSO exam is a two-hour, national online exam covering biology, chemistry, Earth and environmental science, and physics, and is designed to stretch even our strongest science students well beyond the standard curriculum.
It is a fantastic test of both breadth of knowledge and problem-solving under pressure.

Get ready for Science Week!
This year’s Science Week theme is Seeds of Science: Nurturing knowledge for all, focusing on curiosity, inquiry, and shared learning. National Science Week will take place from 15 to 23 August 2026.
Wildflowers:
ABC Radio National is celebrating National Science Week with a search for Australia’s Most Amazing Wildflower, and they need your help! Ten native wildflowers will go head-to-head in the Science Week poll. Will you barrack for a flower from your own state, or pick the most beautiful, or the quirkiest?
Key dates:
- Poll launch: Wednesday August 5 (12-day voting period). Voting will also be available on social media
- Winning flower revealed: Friday August 21

DIY Science 2026:
The organisers have put together 7 scintillating science experiments for National Science Week 2026. Each one features an instruction sheet, along with a video from our friends at Questacon showing how you can do these experiments at home.

Chemistry and Art Competition
Although not a formal Science Week activity, students can enter the RACI Chemistry and Art Competition.
The International Chemistry & Art Competition invites students to explore chemistry beyond the lab - through creativity, imagination and self-expression. This competition gives young people the chance to turn chemical concepts into powerful artworks, showing that chemistry is not just formulas and experiments, but colour, emotion, innovation and impact. By entering, students gain an international platform to showcase their work, have their creativity celebrated by professional chemists, educators, and illustrators and join a global community that values both science and imagination. It’s a unique opportunity to build confidence, be seen, and discover that chemistry can be as creative as it is scientific.
Theme for 2026: Chemistry Powering our Planet
From the electricity that lights our homes to the fuels that power our cars, chemistry is the engine behind energy, motion, and innovation. This theme invites participants to explore how chemistry powers our world - and the future. Students can interpret the theme literally or imaginatively, combining science with art to show the energy, reactions, and transformations that make life and technology possible.
