Classroom Happenings

F/1 CLASSROOM

Recently, we celebrated Catholic Education Week, a special time to reflect on faith and learning at Sacred Heart. Foundation and Year 1 explored how we can follow in Jesus’ footsteps by showing kindness, compassion and care for others.

We also learned about Saint Mary MacKillop, Australia’s first saint and founder of the Josephite order. Students discovered how she opened the first Catholic school in a stable in rural Australia and worked to help all children access education.

They especially loved hearing that Mary MacKillop kept sweet treats in her pockets for children, and enjoyed receiving a small treat of their own to celebrate!

Our class created beautiful stained-glass inspired artworks featuring silhouettes of Mary MacKillop, using vibrant colours to reflect her warmth, kindness and faith.

In Digital Technologies, Foundation and Year 1 have been exploring the exciting world of algorithms. We learned that an algorithm is a set of clear instructions used to complete a task or solve a problem.

Our class followed and created algorithms for everyday activities such as brushing teeth and navigating obstacle courses. Through games, movement activities and problem-solving challenges, students discovered how important it is for instructions to be clear, in order, and not conflicting. Just like computers, we found that if directions are confusing or missing steps, the “algorithm breaks”!

It has been wonderful to see students developing their problem-solving, communication and critical thinking skills through hands-on learning experiences.

YEAR 2 & 3

I am always talking about how much wonderful and amazing work we do in the year 2/3 classroom- For our newsletter, I thought that I would let the students tell you about all the hard work they do and the things that they have enjoyed the most in their learning lately...

"In the 2/3 classroom I have learnt about measurement. We learnt about mm, cm and m and got to do lots of hands-on measuring activities. It's been awesome!" - Chiara

"I have been measuring the things that we drew in our books. We used a 1m ruler to measure things that are big. I measured Henry! It's been hard, but I liked it." - Ollie

"We have been learning about Captain Cook. We wrote about him in our books and we wrote about him coming to Australia and taking over the land with the British. I liked writing about him the best." -Anahita

"I enjoyed learning about St Patrick, Mary McKillop and Mother Theresa in Religion. I liked it because we got to use the laptops for research and I got to learn about how St Patrick got taken away by pirates and was executed. I think this is important because then I know how people have died and I know their past." - Audrey

"We have been learning about measurement in maths. We learn about metre rulers, and we got to measure anything we wanted that was big. We even got to measure Miss Lockwood, Lisa and all of our friends! It was so much fun!" - Freya

"I liked learning about the fruits of the spirit in Religion. I really liked the funny song and it's been fun to work on the computers in Religion. I have also really liked the dancing that we have been doing. It has been great!" - Elsie

"I have really liked our STEM lessons the best! I like it because when I was foundation and did STEM it was fun. We get to build things and make them work. I also have liked Sport. That's the two things I really like!" - Ivar

"I have enjoyed the worksheets. I like the wordsearches that are in our Handwriting books. I like the measuring sheets to because I have really liked measuring stuff. The best part has been learning the size of objects." - Elijah

"I have really enjoyed doing work on the computers. In Religion we were searching up things about important people, and it was fun to learn new information about them. We then shared a bit of the information with the class. It was a fun activity." -Paige

"I liked the one where we were figuring out the multiples of four for numbers. We have also been measuring on maps and converting cms to kms and that has been fun too. I have really been enjoying our work on the laptops too. I've liked learning to log in and use the laptops." -Olivia

"We have been learning to use the computers. We worked on logging on and using all the parts of the keyboard. We have been using them to research important people in Religion, which was fun too. I don't have a computer, so it's just been fun learning things!" - Henry

"Maths has been fun. We did some measuring in the 4/5/6 classroom. I measured the side of the class and a step stool. I like how we got to actually measure." - Bethany

"We used the metre sticks to measuring Miss Lockwood. I liked learning the laptop parts and learning how to log in. I hope we get to do an Essential assessment on the laptops one day!" - Jack

"Religion has been good. It was good when we were looking at Mary Mackillop, St Patrick and Mother Theresa. It was fun looking them up on the laptops. I got a bit stuck and it was a bit hard, but when I keep trying on the laptops, I think I'll get better." - Greyson

"I have liked division in Maths. We got to share out with counters. Multiplication was alright too, but Division was the best. Measurement has been really fun. I really like measuring stuff and sometimes I help my dad measure things. I think learning about it in class will make me more helpful for dad." -Aiden

"Sport has been the best. Games are so cool. I like maths and I liked measuring things with the rulers." -Archer

"I have liked writing in our classroom. I like working on how to write my letters correctly and how to hold my pencil. I have very neat Handwriting." - Harper
