Every child has the right to learn and every teacher has the right to teach. 

        Lesson Plan: Building Positive Relationships 

Step 1: List Learning Intentions and Success Criteria

We are learning: how our words and actions can help us build positive relationships with others 

It will look like:

• showing respect when talking to others
• Using kind and encouraging words
• Listening when others talk
• Including people in games and conversations 
• Solving problems calmly and fairly 
• Recognising behaviours that help or harm relationships 

Step 2:  List a rationale for teaching the behaviour

Step 3:  Identify examples and non-examples of the desired behaviour 

What would the behaviour look/sound like?                      

Examples

Using your manners

Offering to help someone when you notice they need something

Offering others to play or to join in conversations

Solving problems fairly

Supporting and encouraging others

Making compromises

Checking on someone when they are upset

Listening to others when they are talking 

What would the behaviour not look/sound like?

Non-examples

Using mean words or calling people names

Leaving others out of games or conversations

Needing to talk ‘privately’ and excluding some people 

Laughing at people when they make a mistake

Excluding people from your games

Interrupting or talking over people

Ignoring friends when they are upset

Dragging people away from people they are playing with so they can play with only you 

Telling others who they can and can’t play with
