Football Fever!

The next few weeks in sport, we have been celebrating the World Cup with a soccer focus during sport lessons. We have been working on passing, dribbling and other balls skills and finishing our lessons with mini games. It is exciting to see the talent here at HFL and this was definitely on display at the North Shore Interschools Stage 3 Soccer, held on Tuesday at Koola Oval and attended by our senior students. The students had a great time and came back buzzing!

This week, the Seniors took part in a Soccer Gala Day and had an awesome time. Everyone played lots of games and showed great teamwork, effort, and sportsmanship.

Students supported each other, tried their best, and had fun improving their skills. Whether they were playing or cheering, everyone helped make the day great.

We’re especially proud of how respectful and positive everyone was. It was a fun day and we can’t wait to do it again next year. Thanks to the teachers and organisers for making it all happen!

As most of you are probably aware, the Australian Socceroos kicked off their World Cup campaign in style over the weekend, defeating Turkiye 2–0 in Vancouver thanks to brilliant goals from Connor Metcalfe and Nestory Irankunda and some even more impressive goal saves from goalkeeper, Patrick Beach. Coach Tony Popovic’s bold decision to back a youthful starting lineup paid off, delivering an impressive performance and securing just the Socceroos’ second-ever win in a tournament opener.

Some notable stats from the game....

  • This win was just the second ever win for Australia  in a World Cup opener.
  •  Prior to the match, the Turkiye team was worth an estimated €600 million compared to roughly €70 million for the Australian lineup.
  • Irankunda is now the youngest ever Socceroo to score a goal at a World Cup.
  • Patrick Beach as goal keeper made 8 critical saves in the match. His key saves included a save from a long-range shot by Abdulkerim Bardakci, a free-kick from Arda Guler, and a shot from near the penalty spot by Kerem Akturkoglu.
  • Beach's performance resulted in a clean sheet, with Australia winning the match 2-0.
