Writing

Over the last two weeks the F/1 students have been exploring the text Bears Don’t Read by Emma Chichester Clark. In the story the Bear finds a book and goes to town to find someone to teach him to read the book. For writing, the F/1 students did their own book review of a story they enjoy. The students went to the library to select a familiar book then wrote the title and why they like the story.

PE

This week the F/1 students were excited to continue their PE lessons with Milo who spent the last few weeks teaching them how to play tennis, however this week has started lessons on golf. They enjoyed the practice of using a golf club to hit tennis balls towards the nets while also learning how to be safe.

Grade 2

English

The story, Collecting Colour is set in the Top End of the Northern Territory and follows young Rose as she spends a day with her friend Olive and Olive’s mother, Karrang.

Together, they help gather natural materials from the bush to use in weaving baskets and bags. Rose and Olive, along with their extended family, collect pandanus leaves and stringy bark, as well as berries, roots, and leaves to create natural dyes for their colourful woven pieces. The story features Rose, a non-Indigenous Australian girl, and her Aboriginal friend Olive, whose mother, Karrang, is a talented fibre artist. The book highlights themes such as friendship, family, community, cultural traditions, and the connection between nature and creative expression.

As part of our first session, we completed a prediction table to explore what the story might involve.

Science

During our science lessons we have been busy making predictions and testing our hypothesis about the many things in our world. Our predictions about how long it will take for the celery to change colour proved an interesting activity.

Grade 3/4

Maths

We recently started our length and measurement unit. Students have enjoyed using their skills to measure items around the room. We have learnt about informal and formal measurement tools as well as some of the different units of measurement. We have discussed scale and how scale is used on maps.

Winter Sports

What a blast we had in Kyabram! From diving into spike ball and soaring through 9 ball in the air, to the fast-paced action of sideline basketball and the thrill of hungry games—there was never a dull moment with our amazing friends from schools across the district. A huge shoutout to Miss Eade, Dee, and Moni for bringing the energy and making the day unforgettable!

Grade 5/6

Maths

It’s been a productive few weeks in Grade 5/6! We recently wrapped up our first Mathematics unit on decimals, with students showing great growth in their understanding of place value, comparison and operations involving decimal numbers. This week, we’ve begun an exciting new topic—probability—where students are learning to describe and predict the likelihood of everyday events using appropriate language.

English

Students concluded their novel study of Dirrarn with thoughtful discussions about identity, culture, and belonging. They’ve also produced some impressive informative recounts based on the story of Jandamarra, showing both empathy and a developing ability to write with purpose. This week, we’ve started exploring a new text - an anthology titled Waves, which features powerful refugee stories told through multiple voices and perspectives. We look forward to the rich discussions and writing this will inspire in the coming weeks.

Inquiry

Students have been working hard on the creation of their dioramas. They have enjoyed using a variety of mediums and art supplies to depict key moments from significant historical events. Their designs are supported by the research they’ve gathered, and it’s been wonderful to see their creativity and enthusiasm throughout this process.

Religion

Religion lessons have focused on the sacraments, including symbols, rituals, and why they are important celebrations in the Catholic Church. Students have been completing 5W charts, working in small groups, exploring the seven important sacraments—such as marriage and baptism—and identifying the who, what, where, why, and when of each. They have also been sharing their ideas and thoughts about these sacraments with their peers.

In this issue
