What is Pentecost?

Pentecost is a special celebration in the Christian calendar that takes place 50 days after Easter Sunday, this year it was Sunday 8th June. It marks the moment when the Holy Spirit came down upon the disciples, filling them with courage and inspiring them to share the good news of Jesus with people from all over the world. Pentecost is often called the birthday of the Church because it's when the Christian community truly began to grow.

At school, we reflect on how the Holy Spirit helps us to be kind, brave, and full of love — just like Jesus taught.

Symbols of Pentecost:

  • 🔥 Flames – Represent the tongues of fire that appeared above the disciples' heads.
  • 🕊️ Dove – A symbol of peace and the Holy Spirit.
  • 🌍 Languages – A reminder that the Spirit helped the disciples speak in many tongues so everyone could understand.
  • 🔴 Red – The liturgical colour for Pentecost, symbolising fire and the Spirit's energy.

Here is some work that the Grade 2 class created as part of their Pentecost unit in RE:

Come, Holy Spirit,

fill the hearts of your faithful.

Kindle in us the fire of your love.

Help us to use our words and actions

to bring peace, joy, and hope to others.

Amen.
