STEM

This term the students have been working on wide variety of topics and learning areas.

Prep students had a couple of weeks using Google tools, in particularly Google docs.  They are now very proficient at logging onto the chromebook and navigating to their Google Drive.  They are now using one of the most popular apps throughout the school-Codespark to develop their coding and problem solving skills.

Year 1 students were discovering all of the tools available in Google Slides and are now working their way through Code.org coding program.  They love having to input the code to get Angry Bird to the pig!

Year 2 students were working on an app called Tynker.  Using a whole variety of codes to complete tasks.  They have now just started a unit on design and engineering looking at our school playground and playgrounds around the world.  They will eventually design and build a prototype piece of playground equipment.

Year 3 students have been using the app Scratch Junior.  They have looked at and used all of the codes available and are now designing and creating their own piece of work for the Scratch Junior showcase on the last week of term.  This piece could be an interactive quiz, a story, a game etc.

Year 4 students have been using the online version of Scratch for the first time.  We

co constructed a couple of simple tasks and interactive stories. The students are now choosing from a variety of tutorials to further their coding understanding before enhancing one of the tutorial outcomes or creating their own.  They will be presenting these on the final week of term at the Scratch Showcase.

Year 5 students have also been building on their Scratch skills from last year.  We co created two games using new code they had not previously used.  They are now further developing and enhancing one of those games to be presented at the Scratch Showcase on the final week of term.

Year 6 students have been using the online program Tinkercad this term.  They have developed their skills within this program- duplicating, resizing, creating holes, using shapes to create objects etc.  They then put their designers cap on to design a small gift for their Prep buddy. This will be printed for them and given to them at the end of the year.  Following this the students have chosen an area to focus on to do a "free choice" design.  This could be their ultimate bedroom, a sports stadium, a replica of a character etc.  These will be assessment pieces for the students.
