Applications Open for GroupFoto

The Ballarat International Foto Biennale is inviting high school students aged 14–18 from Ballarat and regional Victoria to apply for GroupFoto, its new youth council.

Ten participants will be selected to work with artists and festival staff to shape youth programming for the 2027 Ballarat International Foto Biennale, including a youth photography award and events during the September 2027 school holidays.

You’ll meet five times per year across 2026 and 2027, and receive $250 each year as a thank you for your time and ideas.

You do not need experience with photography to apply.

Applications close at 11:59 pm, Monday 11 May.

School-Based Apprenticeships

Congratulations to Year 11 students, Lane Dubignon and Parker Devries, who are both undertaking onsite school-based apprenticeships in 2026. Lane, who is assisting with Groundskeeper duties, is studying a Certificate II in Horticulture, while Parker has stepped into the role of Canteen Assistant, studying Certificate III in Hospitality. We wish them both the best of luck with their future aspirations.

Explore Working in Agriculture Work Experience Program

Highlands LLEN were delighted to recently deliver their Explore Working in Agriculture Work Experience Program, with 18 students from local schools participating in a two-day, hands-on industry work experience across the Ballarat region and beyond.

BSC were fortunate to have Year 10 student, Courtney Armeni, participate in the informative and eventful program. Throughout the program, students engaged in a diverse range of agricultural experiences through site visits, industry tours, and direct interaction with employers and training providers.

This included visits to:

CHS Broadbent Grain Facility
Alnor Partners Dairy
CVLX Saleyards
TB White
Frasers Farming
Hall Farm (Wimmera)
Longerenong College

Across the two days, students were immersed in real-world agricultural environments, gaining exposure to the full supply chain — from livestock and dairy production through to grain handling, sales, and wool classing. They heard directly from industry professionals about career pathways, training opportunities, and the evolving nature of the agriculture sector, while also participating in practical, hands-on activities.

Students explored grain storage and logistics operations, gaining insight into how produce moves from farm to market, and visited a working dairy to understand daily operations, animal care, and modern farming practices. At the CVLX Saleyards and through TB White, they experienced livestock sales and learned about animal handling and the role of stock agents.

The program was further enhanced through visits to Frasers Farming and Hall Farm, where students were introduced to broadacre farming, harvesting operations, and fine Merino sheep production. At Longerenong College, students explored further education pathways and participated in a workshop on wool classing, helping to connect their experiences to future opportunities within the industry.

The success of the program was clearly reflected in the outstanding student feedback:

100% of students rated the experience as “Very Good” or “Excellent”
100% of students indicated they would recommend the program to others

Students consistently highlighted the value of being able to step outside the classroom and into real workplaces, noting how impactful it was to engage directly with employers, ask questions, and see the wide variety of roles available within agriculture. For many, the experience challenged their perceptions of the industry and broadened their understanding of the diverse and modern career opportunities available. Programs such as this play a critical role in supporting students to make informed decisions about their future through meaningful exposure to industry.

Upcoming Opportunities

City of Ballarat Work Experience – 27th April to 1st May

This program provides students with exposure to the broad range of services and operations within local government. Students will explore areas including emergency management, community services, infrastructure, parks and recreation, arts and culture, planning and regulatory services. Site visits will include key facilities such as the Animal Shelter, Libraries, Parks and Gardens, Ballarat Lifestyle and Aquatic Centre, Childcare and Parent Support services, and the Works Depot. Students will also gain insight into council governance, including decision-making processes and the role of councillors.

Explore Working in Big Build – 29th & 30th April

This program will provide students with exposure to major infrastructure and construction projects across the region. Students will hear from industry professionals across civil engineering, architecture, construction project management, urban planning and government infrastructure, alongside site visits and practical experiences. Students will visit sites including Integra - Aberdeen Estate, Built – Hospital site, Kane/Nicholson Construction – Mars Stadium

Explore Working in Automotive – 6th & 7th May

Students will experience a variety of automotive and transport settings, including dealerships, independent garages, heavy vehicle operations and equipment providers. Delivered in partnership with Federation TAFE, this program provides exposure to a range of automotive and transport settings, highlighting pathways from light vehicle mechanics through to diesel fitting and heavy vehicle maintenance. Students will visit sites including CHS Broadbent, SEM, Daimler Trucks, local car dealerships, and O’Connors.

Explore Working in Finishing Trades – 19th & 20th May

Delivered in partnership with Build Skills Centre, this program focuses on plastering, painting, bricklaying and tiling. Students will engage in hands-on activities and site visits, gaining insight into apprenticeships and specialised finishing roles across the construction sector.

Explore Working in Welding – 28th & 29th May

In partnership with BGT, this program offers students practical experience in welding and metal fabrication. Students will participate in workshop-based learning and industry visits, exploring career pathways in fabrication, manufacturing and construction.

Federation University Health Industry Day – 21st July (now taking bookings)

Bookings are now open for the Federation University Health Industry Day on 21 July 2026. This event provides students with the opportunity to explore a wide range of health careers through interactive sessions, industry presentations, and access to university training facilities.
