Auslan Takes Over the Senior School!

 This Week in Auslan…

Grade 3 & 4 students have been learning all things sport in celebration of the Commonwealth Games! Students have been building their sporting vocabulary and using these signs to ask and answer questions using Auslan grammar. They have also put their sign knowledge to the test through some friendly competition using Kahoot and Blooket.

Students were then “selected” for different sports and challenged to apply their knowledge of the five parameters of Auslan. They created postcards for their classmates, identifying and describing the key features of their selected sport sign using handshape, orientation, location, movement and non-manual features (expression).

Grade 5 students have been busy learning how to describe people in Auslan. They put their new vocabulary and questioning skills into action with a game of “Guess Who?” – Auslan style, with voices off! Students did a sensational job asking descriptive questions in Auslan and using visual information to work out their mystery person.

Grade 6 students have extended their understanding of the five parameters of Auslan by exploring minimal pairs – two signs that differ by only one parameter. Students analysed videos of different signs to identify which parameter had changed, before competing against their classmates in a Kahoot challenge to practise and demonstrate their understanding.

It has been wonderful to see students communicating visually, applying their growing Auslan vocabulary and putting their knowledge into action through games, challenges and hands-on activities!
