Welcome Emely!
My name is Emely Brill, and I am the new German language assistant at Ballarat High School. I will be here until December, supporting the German teachers in their lessons and working with students. I am from Germany and grew up in Saarland. For my studies, I lived in Bingen am Rhein. This is in the western part of the country. I am currently studying English and German at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz and am close to finishing my degree.

During my time here, I hope to gain valuable teaching experience that will help me in my future career. I am very excited about my year at Ballarat High School and look forward to learning more about the Australian school system and culture. So far, I really like Ballarat, it’s a beautiful place and I especially enjoy going for walks by the lake. In my free time, I love reading and spending time with my dogs. I miss them a lot while I’m here and I’m sure they would be very excited to meet you!
My first week at BHS has been both exciting and quite different from my experience in German schools. One noticeable difference is that students wear uniforms, which is not common in Germany. The daily schedule is also a bit different, but I really like that there is a dedicated lunchtime. In Germany, students usually eat whenever they have time and typically bring their own food from home. I also think it’s really cool how enthusiastic students here are about sports and I would love to watch a footy game sometime!

Please feel free to come and talk to me anytime! I really enjoy seeing how you try to learn and speak German, it’s great to see your effort and progress. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, because that’s how we learn. Keep going! You’re doing a great job and I’m looking forward to working with you!
