In Term 1 all students took part in activities focused on teamwork and helping each other to achieve a common goal. These activities are designed to foster new connections and encourage positive relationships as we begin a new year.
Foundation students have been introduced to games of freeze, fruit salad and tag, with an emphasis on moving in different ways, listening and following instructions while improving their spatial awareness. They have been learning how to throw, catch and kick a large ball, with the focus on watching the ball and moving their hands and feet to meet the ball.
Students in Years 1-6 have completed a unit on Australian Rules Football (AFL). In AFL the focus was on the skills of punt-kick, handball and mark (catch), whilst learning some of the basic rules and partaking in various training drills and activities. This culminated in playing a game of touch AFL (no tackling) where students got the opportunity to put their skills into practise.
During the AFL unit there was also the opportunity to increase the students’ aerobic capacities. This entailed students jogging without walking multiple laps of the oval. While increasing lung capacity and improving how the body uses oxygen for energy, it is also great training for the District Cross-Country event, which will be held in early Term 2.
