Grammar

Think of grammar as the "tools" in a writer's belt. We are learning how to use specific types of words to make our writing "pop" and provide more detail for the reader:

• Adjectives & Adverbs: Adding "flavor" to sentences. Instead of saying "The dog ran," we might say "The scruffy dog ran quickly."

• Prepositions: Words that show where or when (like under, between, or during).

• Adverbials: These are phrases that tell us more about how, when, or where an action is happening (e.g., "With a huge smile, she opened the gift").

• Coordinating Conjunctions: Using "joining words" like and, but, and so to link ideas together smoothly.

The Goal: We aren't just learning these terms for a test; we are practicing how to use them to transform simple sentences into exciting, detailed ones.

Factual Recounts

A Factual Recount is a way of telling someone about something that actually happened (like a school trip, a weekend memory, or a science experiment). We will be mastering the entire journey of a piece of writing:

1. Purpose & Structure: Learning that a recount needs a clear beginning (who, what, where, when), a sequence of events in order, and a closing thought.
2. The Writing Process:
   • Planning: Using maps and charts to organize ideas before we write.
   • Drafting: Getting those great ideas down on paper.
   • Editing: The "detective" phase! Checking for spelling, punctuation, and seeing where we can add our new grammar tools to make the story better.
3. Presenting: Building confidence by sharing our finished work with our classmates.
