Year 7 & 8 STEM Incursions: Teamwork, Design, and Real-World Problem-Solving!
At the end of Term 3, all Year 7 and 8 students took part in exciting hands-on STEM incursions that tested their creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving skills!
Year 7 – “Survive the Storm: Build the Ultimate Shelter!”
Our Year 7 students embarked on a thrilling survival challenge where they became engineers and strategists for the day. Working in teams, students designed and built shelters that had to meet specific cost, location, and purpose criteria — all while staying within budget! Once constructed, their shelters faced a series of “extreme weather tests” to see which would stand strongest against the elements. Along the way, teams encountered unexpected obstacles, learning the importance of adaptability, communication, and resilience. Guided by experienced instructors, students applied their STEM and budgeting knowledge in a fast-paced environment that encouraged critical thinking and reflection.
Year 8 – “Collaborate, Construct, and Compete!”
Year 8 students experienced an action-packed day as they worked together to build and race real Billy Carts! In this exciting engineering challenge, teamwork was key as groups designed, constructed, and tested their creations before hitting the racecourse. The activity encouraged students to apply their understanding of design and mechanics while fostering leadership, collaboration, and healthy competition. Under the guidance of qualified teachers, students developed problem-solving and communication skills — and had plenty of fun cheering each other on!
Both incursions highlighted the power of teamwork, innovation, and persistence — valuable skills that extend well beyond the classroom. A huge thank you to our facilitators from Supreme Incursions and our teachers at Lara Secondary for supporting these engaging, memorable STEM experiences!
