News - from the kitchen & garden with Chris and Hadley.

Our cooking and gardening classes are each Tuesday

We would love to have more volunteers in both the garden and kitchen classes.

No garden or kitchen skills required, enthusiasm to support the students as they learn is all you need.

If you would like to know more, come into the office and see Chris (Principal)

This week we welcomed Hadley to our garden classes.

Chris and Hadley will continue with the cooking and gardneing updates in the newsletter.

For this newsletter we have an update from Chris from the final cooking class of last term with 5/6 and this weeks class with P/1

Grade 5 and 6 Cooking Term 1 Week 10

In Cooking, the last week of Term 1,  Grade 5 and 6 cooked a Mexican feast.

We cooked Soft Tacos, Pumpamole, Corn and Tomato Salsa  and made Huevos Rancheros.

From the garden we used parsley, basil , coriander, spring onions, tomatoes, corn, chillies, and eggs from the chooks. We had to buy extra corn and the pumpkin as our pumpkins aren’t ready yet.

Chloe, Ivy, Lily, Alfie, Romy and Emma made and cooked the Soft Tacos. They measured out the ingredients to make 2 batches of dough (60 tacos!). They kneaded the dough until it was smooth. Then did some maths and weighing to divide the dough into 60 even pieces and shape them into small balls, which they rested over recess.  After recess, they worked well together to roll each ball into the thin tacos.  Ivy, Chloe, Grace and Emma cooked the Tacos in the frypans and kept them warm and soft until it was time for us to make our tacos and Heuvos Rancheros.

For the Pumpamole (like Guacamole but with pumpkin instead of avocado), Lexi, Clem, Frankie and Grace cut the pumpkin into small pieces that we baked until it was soft.

While the pumpkin was cooking, they chopped the spring onions and tomatoes, zested and juiced the limes and Clem chopped the chillies carefully. After mashing the pumpkin, they mixed all the ingredients together and tasted it to check for seasoning and added salt and pepper as required.

Heidi, Levi, Pat and Liv and Taj, worked well together to chop  all the ingredients finely for the Corn and Tomato Salsa.  They learnt how to cut the corn kernels safely from the corn cobs.

After they prepared all the ingredients and the spices, they cooked the spices in oil then added the salsa ingredients. They also grated and chopped the cheeses (fetta and tasty) for the Huevos Rancheros.  While the salsa was cooking Pat and Levi organised the sink and rinsed, washed and dried the dishes as groups finished their prepping and cooking.

As the tacos were cooking, students, plated up the Mexican Feast and set the tables.  Alfie took orders for eggs for the Huevos Rancheros and he and Romy cooked the eggs to perfection. He also stayed behind to wash and dry the dishes.  Thanks Alfie!

Great cooking and teamwork Grade 5 and 6!  Thanks Emma.

The recipes are attached. See the photos of their delicious tacos and Heuvos Rancheros.

This is what they said about their last cooking session for Term 1.

I cooked the eggs for the Huevos Rancheros. The food was delicious, especially the tacos.  The Salsa was good and I usually don’t like tomatoes!  Alfie

The best Mexican Feast ever! I made the Tomato and Corn Salsa and did all the dishes with Patrick. Levi

You can’t have too much cheese with your Soft Tacos!  Ivy

I liked how the Pumpamole was a bit spicy.  Clem chopped the Jalapenos Romy

P1 Cooking Week 1

In Cooking this week Grade Prep and 1 students made Vegetable Samosas and Tomato and Garlic Sauce.

From the garden we used the ripe red Tomatoes, Garlic, Potatoes, Carrots, Tromboncino Zucchini, Garlic, Spring Onions and Parsley. Thanks Eve for harvesting all the tomatoes over the holidays so the first frost this year didn’t ruin them.

Marcus’ group made the Tomato and Garlic Sauce.  They learnt how to use the knives safely and how to cut the tomatoes and garlic into small pieces.  They measured out the olive oil and cooked the garlic and chopped  tomatoes to make the delicious sauce.

Chris’ group learnt how to safely peel and grate the carrots, potatoes and zucchini for the Vegetable Samosas. Victor, Eden and their group peeled and grated the potatoes. Tassie, Xavier and their team peeled and grated the huge carrots.  Luca and his group, peeled and grated the zucchinis.

We then measured out the spices and cooked them in the frypan. Then added the grated veggies and everyone had a turn stirring the grated veggies and spices while they cooked.

After recess, students learnt how to knead their pastry until it was very smooth and warm and then flattened out the pastry into a circle.  Students learnt how to roll out and turn their pastry so they made an even circle. Everyone did an amazing job of rolling out an even circle of pastry. (check out the photos!).  They then added a spoonful of the veggie mixture and folded the pastry in half to create the samosas.

While the Vegetable Samosas cooked,  students cleaned the tables, stacked the dishes and worked together to set the tables with bowls and forks and cups.  Eden, and their team picked some colourful flowers to decorate the table.

Everyone tried the dishes and loved the flavours and crunchy pastry of the Vegetable Samosas and the tasty Tomato and Garlic sauce. We invited Hedley. our new Garden teacher, to share our cooking and she was impressed with the veggie harvest and the delicious Samosas and Garlic Tomato Sauce Prep 1s cooked.

It was a great cooking session, well done Preps and Grade 1s and thanks Marcus.
