Music News

Week 1 of this term kicked off with the Take Note workshop, with mentors from the Melbourne International Jazz Festival’s outreach program. Students learnt about styles and genres of jazz, and how to solo in different styles. Many thanks to presenters for sharing their professional journey with our students.

Trombone Choir at Bannockburn

The amazing Mrs Moffatt took a bus full of trombonists off to Bannockburn last Thursday, workshopping and mentoring with Bannockburn Year 4 trombone students, and performing for an enthusiastic lunchtime crowd in the Bannockburn performance space. Our students were great ambassadors for BHS throughout the day and really showcased what an awesome trombone sound they make. Thanks to Emma Moffatt for facilitating experiences like this for our students.

Bunnings BBQ success!

Saturday saw Music Support at Bunnings, selling sausages and drinks to the largest crowd they’ve had in a long time. It was a great community event, with parents and students working the till and managing the lunch crowd with a lot of laughs and fun. They raised over $3000 for their efforts, and a massive thanks to all who volunteered their time, most of all to Joel Gladman, who was at the BBQ from the time the first sausage went on the BBQ, until the last crust was thrown away at 4.30pm.

Flushed with the success of this fundraiser, Music Support are keen to hear from anyone who can help with another Bunnings BBQ on Tuesday 23rd Sept (first Tuesday of the school holidays).

Keep an eye out for details about how to add your name to the roster.

Stay tuned for the date of the next Music Support meeting.

Chopped at Assembly

Chopped blew away the cold weather at General Assembly last week, with some great solos and acrobatics to keep the crowd cheering. Catch them at the Royal Melbourne Show this September!

Roslyn Assembly performance

In Term 2, BHS music students have been coming to school by 8am every Wednesday morning to mentor Grade 6 Roslyn PS students who are in our Year 6 music program. Many thanks to Luke Salmon, Braydn Beckwith Smith, Malin Speare, Rabhin O’Keife, Finn Ibrahim, Emily Flynn, and Elin Basangen for helping to inspire the next generation of BHS musicians!

The Roslyn students had their first public performance at the Roslyn PS assembly last Friday, playing with great confidence and flair for students, teachers and parents.

They are excited to be joining with our BHS Beginning Band in Term 3, making this group the largest in the school, with 58 members!

Jazz Cabaret

Music Support are excited to present the second Jazz Cabaret, featuring amazing musicians Michelle Scully, Kym Dillon (recently featured on the ABC series ‘The Piano’), Georgia Brooks and ex BHS student Sean Loughran, performing alongside and inspiring our own BHS student musicians. There’ll be some dancing, some singing and plenty of amazing musical moments.

For parents who play: Bring your instrument and join in the massed performance at the end of the cabaret – sheet music will be available closer to the day.

Seating is Cabaret style, so bring along a platter to share with your table if desired. This is an all ages, alcohol free event. Band captains and Senior Band students will be selling toasties to fundraise for their upcoming Sydney tour, and hot and cold drinks will also be available for sale.
